Background of the Study:
Multilateral trade policies are designed to promote economic integration and growth by reducing trade barriers and standardizing regulations among nations. However, these policies can have profound effects on domestic sectors such as agriculture, influencing sustainability, production practices, and market access. In Abuja, agricultural sustainability is increasingly impacted by global trade agreements that affect local farmers’ competitiveness and the environment. This study examines how multilateral trade policies influence agricultural practices, resource utilization, and rural livelihoods in Abuja (Okonkwo, 2023). The research explores both the opportunities and challenges presented by open trade regimes, including access to international markets, technology transfer, and potential overexploitation of natural resources. By analyzing policy documents, conducting field surveys, and engaging with agricultural stakeholders, the study evaluates the extent to which multilateral trade policies support or undermine sustainable agriculture. It also considers environmental impacts, economic viability, and the role of government subsidies in mitigating adverse effects, providing a balanced perspective on how global trade dynamics intersect with local agricultural sustainability (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem:
Despite the potential benefits of multilateral trade policies, agricultural sustainability in Abuja faces challenges due to market volatility, environmental degradation, and inadequate support for local farmers. These issues raise concerns about the long-term viability of traditional farming practices under global trade pressures (Adeleke, 2023). This study seeks to identify the specific impacts of trade policies on agriculture and propose measures to balance economic integration with environmental and social sustainability.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of multilateral trade policies on agricultural sustainability in Abuja.
To identify challenges faced by local agricultural practices under open trade regimes.
To propose policy recommendations for promoting sustainable agriculture.
Research questions:
How do multilateral trade policies affect agricultural sustainability in Abuja?
What challenges do local farmers face under these policies?
How can trade policies be adjusted to support sustainable agricultural practices?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it bridges global trade policy and local agricultural sustainability. The findings will assist policymakers in designing trade agreements that protect the environment and support local agriculture, ensuring sustainable development and food security in Abuja.
